The Forgotten Way to Use ToneX - Queen Guitar Tone from an iPad
ToneX pedals are great but they are pedals. Guitarists will put pedals above everything else to get their tone.
One problem with pedals is that they are rather hard to hide from your wife/husband/life partner when purchased.
They can also be expensive experiments.
ToneX was revolutionary soon after it's launch for being the first high quality amp modeller that could be easily run on an iPad or iPhone.
By using AUM Mixer, ToneX and some of the cheap FX plugins in the app store you can build a formidable tone. This is good news for beginners and midlife crisis sufferers alike as it's a lot cheaper than buying pedals.

ToneX One For Queen Guitar Sounds and with Fender Tone Master Pro
Переглядів 1,2 тис.День тому
I've been asked a lot about @ikmultimedia ToneX One. I never used the first ToneX pedal because my rig lives in plugins (ToneX and AmpliTube) and to build a pedal board to do the same would cost and weigh much more and would be far less resilient. However, this is a game changer. It's small. It's cheap. I won't be gigging one myself but if I had to back a pedal board, two of these and something...

      That's a journey that I've been on for a few years now. I think the best thing is to subscribe and keep watching and I'll be going through as many as I can. It's a mix of things always so at it's core it's the guitar, a good BC149 treble booster, Vox AC30 or Deacy amp, room ambience, recording techniques and sometimes some effects. They're all a little different. Are their particular songs you get stuck on?

      Depends on your needs. I’d be a lot more confident using it at a Queen tribute gig because the capture I worked on for two days came come with me. For those scenarios it’s well worth the money. Great video! I use a treble booster into an hx stomp with a KAT n-channel in the left effects loop and TONEX one using one of your captures in the right. I put chorus on one channel and I am really pleased with the results. Still have enough hx slots for delay reverb and harmonizer. Using stereo 2x12 cab with vintage celestion 80s. Sounds epic. Hoping to gig with the setup soon.

      That N Channel is a very interesting device and I'm surprised I haven't seen or heard much of it in the wild as it solves a lot of problems. Do you use a stereo amplifier to drive the cab?

    • @markhollands4756

      @@ThomasBrunkard The n-channel sounds amazing. I do not know why it doesn’t get more attention. I do not have an AC30 to compare but it sounds very similar to your captures (except fuller and more complex harmonics as you might expect from real tubes). I use two Harley Benton GPA100s to drive the stereo cab. Cheap as chips but good quality and very portable.

    Hi Thomas, great video. Very informative. How comes you don't use amplitube on the ipad as your primary rig? I know you can get the irig stomp floor board. Is amplitube on a pc/desktop/mac device better to use or better quality?

    • @ThomasBrunkard
      @ThomasBrunkard 11 днів тому

      This is a very good question. Nowadays (and I will update this video soon) I use AmpliTube 5 and it is much better than the version of AmpliTube that has been languishing on the iPad for years now. AmpliTube 5 can run ToneX natively in the chain and ToneX is the core of my live sound and recordings now. When/if @IKmultimedia bring AmpliTube 5 to iPad and it can in something like AUM Mixer (to manage the separate outputs) I'll ditch the computer. iPads are extremely powerful now and more powerful than the Mac in this film was. The software isn't there to match that power just yet.

      @@JJR3991 This one is a 2018 Intel i7 one. The newer Apple silicone ones are much more efficient and a little lighter. I have the latest one at the moment and I'm running it at 192Khz which seems daft but it helps with all the pitch shifting and has more believable high end up loud to my ears. You could also use a laptop and I'm making a film on how this can be done safely (spoiler - clamshell mode, still using the ipad as the screen). On stage I'm never looking at the screen anymore anyway. My wireless receiver is my tuner now so it's only for when I turn it on or off or if I'm in a difficult venue soundwise (or a festival where I had no soundcheck) and I need to tweak the EQ which is still rare.

    I have a BMG special. I love the sounds. But I find the array of 6 DPDT switches overly complex and difficult to change on the fly without having to look down at the switches. I know the story of the build and how Sir Bri and his dad scrounged for available parts at hand, and these are very common switches. I don't get why all the fan boys many years later keep this. A simple set of 3 2P3T on-on-on switches would give you everything in a much more intuitive and cleaner set up. Each switch controls one PU. Up is on in phase, middle is off, and down is on out of phase. Exactly all the same combos with only 3 switches instead of 6, and much more intuitive IMO. Or if you want to go even beyond the RS tones, you could add a fourth 4PDT switch that shifts between series wiring (which the RS is by default) and parallel wiring (more like a strat).

I reckon if you regularly gigged only this guitar you could get familiar enough with the options to realistically make good use of them. But if you handed this to me right now for a gig I’d love the idea of it but I’d be completely at sea!! How do you find it live? Are you able to use all those sounds with ease?

    • @ThomasBrunkard
      @ThomasBrunkard 16 днів тому

      It'd be like being driven blindfolded into the Curragh and dropped there in the dead of night alright! I only had it done and I'm already reasonably comfortable with it as there is a logic to it. I have to run six switches for the Queen tribute gig so maybe I get an advantage 🤣 I'd say in most bands there's only a few one would use. Just depends on the material. I haven't gigged it yet but I think I'd probably have just a couple of combinations committed to memory. It really comes into its own for clean tones and if you're a volume knob user. Especially cool for recording.

The Burns Tri-Sonic’s really sound great. Does Burns still exist and does it still make the Tri-Sonics? Otherwise I would have custom ordered a Dansan like a good friend of mine or a Raymon. I am still absolutely blown away by this beautiful instrument and still can’t believe that I now own my dream guitar every time I even just look at it. I am still learning because I just started playing guitar 2 years ago and began with a quite cheap Harley Benton CST-24 (PRS McCarthy Replica). From the page:"This is the same pickup as being used on the newest top of the range "BMG SUPER, personally approved by Brian May himself" I must say that that they are the closest one to Adesons that I have heard, but excactly as Brian has said: "more bite, growl and volume". And I agree that waiting list for Brian May Super at the moment can be obstacle😂 I think we are spoiled by possibilities nowdays with Brian May guitar related things. I used to think years ago that Guild Pro Red Special is really acccurate and cool, but nowdays with Rsconversions parts you can easily get basic BMG to look much better than Guilds.

      It''s quite a big lower bout alright. Wider than a Les Paul. I wanted to get one of those luxurious Gruv Gear cases but alas, she's a Fat Bottomed Girl.

    Absolutely riveting. My favorite TB video so far. I can’t play guitar. I love Brian May…I now want to get one of these Guitars, period. Thanks Thomas. Outstandingly professional and insightful as always. Cheers, Niall 🎸

    How easy is it to play with a sixpence? I am a bit of a (mediocre) shredder, ie Steve Vai style. I love the way the RS sounds and looks but prefer more strings, flat fingerboards, better upper-fret access, other modern furnishings and so on, and high end copies are so expensive and lack the features that I want in a guitar as someone who isn't bothered about being a BM purist but just wants the sound and the basic aesthetic intact (maybe with a gaudy blue quilt top!). I wonder how much it'd be to get a seven-string RS made? I will have to have a custom instrument hand made to get exactly what I like, obviously. This comment will give most Brian May purists a seizure, I'm sure.

      We were just talking about this in that Facebook group I referenced actually. People put the circuitry into all sorts of guitars. The seven string thing would need custom pickups. More often people have put the pickups and switch system into a strat. I reckon you could do something similar with an Ibanez with anwiring schema to turn the blade switch into a greatest hits of Brian May sounds. Once you have the treble booster doing a Vox thing sorted you’ll get there I’m sure. Worth chatting to Matt in Yonderbosk avout all this if you’re minded to do something like that.

    Awesome video. Great start up for anyone who is interested in getting Brian’s tone with many different budgets. Most importantly was breaking down the rig and the signals in the chain. Fantastic job, keep em coming. Rock on 🤘

    I have the three pickup custom Les Paul and the combinations is Bridge by itself, middle is bridge and middle together and neck by itself.

      Yes! That's exactly correct. An error on my part. Once you get combinations like this into your life your memory gets corrupted!

    Nice one Thomas,very interesting, I have recentl purchased an ES 345 with a varitone switch, and while nowhere near as many tones as you have hear it's turned out to be an amazing RS stand-in, the varitone at 6 is very OOP sounding and then back at 1 it's all Humbucker jazz or LP I love Gibson's personally and realised the LP is my fav 'other guitar' as well.

    When everyone wanted a Les Paul or a Stratocaster, Dr. Brian May said «Fuck it. I'll make my own guitar!» Gotta love The Red Special. One of the most Iconic guitars in rock history.

    What about the tone knob, I've read that it was purely for show and not used. But when having a Red Special with a tone knob that works, should you put it all the way up or down?

    • @ThomasBrunkard
      @ThomasBrunkard Місяць тому

      I touched on that actually! He doesn't have one now since the Superpot was put in for the volume. I think he did use it times past (read the dark end of the 1970s!). He was messing around a lot with eBows then and they really need you to be able to dim the guitar. Ordinarily I'd leave the tone control fully bright but on stage I turn it all down for a cello part I play with feedback over the outro of Don't Stop Me Now. I couldn't live without the tone control myself.

    It's a cute tone, it is as you say a little violin hint and cello inflection too, Eric Johnson's violin tone is the wet dream delivered for sure, I think Mr May's tone is yummy too, sounds kind of wah-cocked slightly too with a shit load of magic on the milky mid being tweaked beautifully, the little amp is cool too, sound like it's having it's tubes severely accosted...great tone! nearly as good as mine I honestly think....I'm not a Queen fan or follower much, I'm more into the specialists who captured a fistful of chewy milky wasps-hornets bubbling in a creamy sauce....ta for the demo! 🔥
